Joint Pain in Women After 40: Why It Happens and How to Stay Active

Many women notice that their knees, back, hands or shoulders start to ache more after the age of 40. Housework, caring for family and work leave little time for self-care, and joint pain is often ignored until it affects daily life.

Why joint pain can increase after 40

  • Hormonal changes: around menopause, falling oestrogen levels can affect joints, muscles and bones.
  • Bone health: women lose bone density faster after menopause.
  • Less muscle strength: muscles that support the joints weaken with age if they are not used.
  • Daily strain: long hours of standing, sitting on the floor, lifting and bending during housework.
  • Weight changes that put extra load on the knees and back.

Simple steps to stay active

  1. Move every day. A 20–30 minute walk, yoga or light exercise keeps joints flexible.
  2. Build strength. Simple exercises like sit-to-stand from a chair, wall push-ups and straight-leg raises protect the joints.
  3. Look after your bones. Include milk, curd, paneer, ragi, sesame and green leafy vegetables, and get some morning sunlight. Ask your doctor whether you need a calcium or vitamin D test.
  4. Make housework easier. Use a stool instead of squatting, a long-handled mop, and take breaks.
  5. Make time for self-massage. Five minutes in the evening with Dr. Joint Guard Oil on stiff knees, back or shoulders is a simple way to relax tired joints.
  6. Sleep well – 7–8 hours helps muscles and joints recover.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if joints are swollen, red or warm, if stiffness lasts more than an hour every morning, if several joints hurt at once, or if you have a fall or fracture. These can be signs of conditions that need proper diagnosis and treatment.
