Ankle and Foot Pain: Common Causes and Simple Home Care
Medically reviewed by Dr. Monika Siwach, BAMS – Ayurvedic doctor, 10 years of experience. Last reviewed: 25 October 2026.
Your ankles and feet carry your full body weight with every step. When they ache, even a short walk to the market or standing in the kitchen can feel tiring.
Common causes of ankle and foot pain
- Standing for long hours, especially on hard floors
- Flat or unsupportive footwear, or walking barefoot on hard surfaces
- An old ankle sprain that never fully recovered
- Extra body weight putting load on the ankles and feet
- Tight calf muscles
- Age-related stiffness of the small joints of the feet
Home care that helps
- Wear supportive footwear with a cushioned sole and good grip, both indoors and outside.
- Rest and raise your feet on a pillow for 15–20 minutes after a long day.
- Cold pack for fresh swelling (wrapped in cloth, 10 minutes); warm water soak for long-standing stiffness.
- Massage gently. Massage a little Dr. Joint Guard Oil around the ankle bones, over the top of the foot and up the calf for 3–5 minutes, twice a day.
- Keep a healthy weight – see joint pain and body weight.
Simple exercises
- Ankle circles: sitting down, slowly circle each foot 10 times each way.
- Alphabet: "write" the letters A to Z in the air with your big toe.
- Calf stretch: hands on a wall, one leg back with the heel down; hold 20–30 seconds.
- Towel scrunch: scrunch a small towel towards you with your toes, 10 times.
Knees and ankles often hurt together – read Ayurvedic oil for knee pain or, in Hindi, घुटनों और टखनों की देखभाल.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you cannot put weight on the foot after a fall or twist, the ankle looks deformed, there is severe swelling, redness or warmth, or numbness in the foot. People with diabetes should get any foot pain, wound or numbness checked early.
